The gel fuel is really oddorless. I have the fireplace in my basement just to take the chill out and the heat generated from the gel fuel is nice and warm. Looks just like a gas fireplace, I have a gas fireplace in my living room, I think I like the gel flame better than the flame in the gas stove.I've only used one so far. The "gel" was practically liquid. It burned fine, but certainly didn't last three hours. It seemed to last more like 90 minutes.
