I've had this hot plate for a couple of weeks as of this writing. I use it mainly for cooking rice. Initially, I was bothered by its temperature-cycling (resulting from the heating element's high power and low mass, and the imprecise nature of the low-cost temperature control system), but once I found the right setting, I found that it does a good job on rice, and more quickly than my previous hot plate, which kept a more even temperature but took forever to get up to temperature and cool down.

When it came time to clean beneath the heating element, I realized that the element cannot be lifted, perhaps to prevent it from being damaged by flexing. I found that a flimsy bottle brush can reach most of the area underneath the burner, and that a toothbrush can reach the rest.

I opened it up, and found that it appears to be quite well made inside. The temperature control is mechanical in nature, and it controls the temperature by causing a mechanical change to a bimetalic strip. So, it wouldn't wear out like a potentiometer.

So, although cleaning it takes some effort, I consider it a small price to pay for the performance and quality. But only time will tell whether its apparent quality translates into longevity.

My primary purpose for purchasing this item was to light hookah coals. The coils get hot very quickly and stay hot, since there is no auto shut-off feature like most other models. It has a plug to attach to the wall and has a red light when it is off (when the knob is at 0) and a green light when it is on (when the knob is at 1-5 or Max). I've lit coco nara's in about 5-10 minutes. This is insanely fast compared most methods of lighting coals in your own home.

I've not noticed the counter beneath the coils rising in temperature at all, but the white box is made of metal and does retain heat when the coils are on.

I'm sure this could be used for a lot of reasons. I use it to heat up the coconut charcoals for my hookah, and it works great for that. This range has a variable temperature control and the hottest setting gets REALLY hot.

Bought this for the sole purpose of using it to light natural coconut hookah charcoals. No Auto-OFF feature like other models. Turn this up and it keeps the heat as long as you need it to. Can't comment on using it to cook with, but I'm sure it serves well in that department. Don't waste your money on buying burners through Hookah/Shisha websites. Go the Amazon route and save...as always!

It is almost impossible for me to tell how much propane is left in a tank. I think I may have returned a tank with propane remaining in it a time or two which makes this unit pay for itself. I have had the heater for about two weeks and it had worked flawlessly. I use it to supplement the heat from our heat pump when the heat pump cannot keep up. Its usually when the temperature is in the teens or below zero.

I'm increasing the star rating of the product to Five stars with the some notes and comments.

OTHER NOTES:

I use the Sunheat heater in the living room and feel safe using the heater with a toddler walking/crawling around. The issue I face is that there should be some way to lock out the control buttons on the main heater unit as my curious toddler seems to press the buttons on the unit and mess up the settings. Since the unit already comes with a remote, I would suggest that the manufacturer please look into incorporating this feature which would be very beneficial for the consumer.

I placed a new order for the Sunheat heater (Black Cherry color) on 02/18/2013 and received the heater on 02/20/2013. The heater arrived in one piece without any issues. Let me review the heater once its been used for a couple of months. Stay tuned....

Update 02/08/2013

When I placed a replacement order for the Sunheat Black Cherry heater, the website showed that it was out of stock. I checked the order status daily. I was happy when I saw that my replacemewnt order had the message that it was shipping soon. When I tracked the replacement Sunheat heater, the UPS tracking information showed it was delivered on 02/05/2013 and was left at my front door. When I went home from work, I saw a smaller box left at my front door that could not physically contain the Sunheat heater due to its dimensions. Also the box was light as a feather. I opened the box and there were some brown paper packing materials in it. An empty box was shipped to me by the amazon fulfilment center. When looking at the Amazon website, the inventory for the Sunheat Black Cherry color still showed out of stock. I called Amazon customer service and explained the situation. Amazon customer service infromed me that they will refunded me the amount. They asked me place a new order when the item is back in stock. I'm still curious to know as to how I managed to get an empty box without nothing in it. All in all I'm still without a Sunheat heater.

I ordered the original Sunheat infrared zone heater with the remote on January 17th 2013. I ordered the Black color and paid $379.00. It was delivered to me on January 22nd 2013. I'm an Amazon Prime memeber and this was delivered using 2 day shipping option. The heater had its own cardboard box, that was shipped inside an amazon box. I opened the heater and noticed that the wood cabinet had a small ship on the side. Hence I requested a replacement. The replacement was ordered on January 22nd and was delivered to me on January 25th via Amazon Prime. Everything looked fine outside the heater. But when I picked it up I could hear noises of nuts and bolts loose and clanking inside the unit. Even though I wanted to return this, I wanted to give the unit another try. As far as the heater it functioned without any issues. But I was not able to set the heaters internal clock. I set the internal clock to 8:24PM and after ten minutes later, when I checked the clock, it still showed 8:24PM. (The internal clock is an essential component of the heater and it is used to program the start and stop times). I wanted to get a replacement unit and placed the order. But I cancelled the order for the Black unit as I saw the unit with the color I wanted at a cheaper price offered by Amazon. I order the Sunheat heater with the Black Cherry color for $329 ($50 cheaper than the Black color) on January 25th and it was delivered to me on January 29th. The outside of the cardboard box looked tattered and beaten up. I still opened the box thinking the packaging inside might protect the heater. But I was incorrect in my assumption. The heater was pretty beat up and whole cabinet unit fell apart when taken out of the box and also there were lots of big nicks and dents on the cabinet. I have requested for the replacement and I'm awaiting to receive it.

I've used a Hot Shot a whole lot for heating up water for drinking various types of tea and other beverages. If it's right for what you're brewing, it really is a great product--the water is heated within a minute or two, which is way faster than a kettle, and it holds the perfect amount for a large mug.

There are a couple things to note though. Like other reviewers have said, because of the product's design, some taller mugs (especially large vacuum-sealed caddy mugs) won't fit in to receive the water, so you either can't use them or have to dispense the water into another container first and pour it from there. Also, you definitely should empty the excess water after you're done--you might even want to open the lid while it's still warm to let the extra moisture evaporate. This is because the inside is metal, and re-re-reheated water that's been sitting in there gets a bit gross and might not be the healthiest.

The last issue, which affects me more than it may others, is that the Hot Shot heats the water to boiling or very near to boiling. This is great if you're drinking black tea, hot chocolate, or hot cider, but if you're drinking green tea (which takes hot water that is well below boiling), the water from the Hot Shot can be too hot and make the tea bitter. If it's right for the beverage you want to make, though, I can't recommend a more convenient or quick option.

We have used a Hot Shot for many years, replacing the first two because they eventually stopped heating water sufficiently (only up to 160 degrees F). Since they had become a mainstay in our kitchen, used several times a day, we were eager to replace the last one, and ordered the sleek new black model, which is of a somewhat different design than the original.

The first one we received from Amazon leaked considerably if we didn't use up all the water that had been heated, so we sent it back (Amazon paid for the entire return postage and sent us a new one at no extra cost). The second one leaked just like the first one, through the dispenser spout, when water was left to sit in the heating chamber. We never had this problem with the older model.

I am giving it two stars instead of only one, since some people may not mind being sure to empty the heating chamber after each use. (If it didn't leak, I would give it 4 stars -and 5 stars, if it were also tall enough to accomodate taller cups).

I've used a Hot Shot for at least 20 years and won't go without one. But they are made real cheap now. My son is still using the one he bought over 10 years ago. I had this less than a year when it leaked, and is getting worse. Put water in, press the button. Before you get the water poured in and put the cup under the spout it is dripping, real fast now. By the time the water is heated, if I grab it real quick I lose about 2 tbsp. (in about a minute). If I don't catch it right away it will leak enough so I have to warm up more water to make a full cup. I keep a towel under the spout now. This worked good for a few months. Think about it, if every small appliance in your kitchen had to be replaced within a year......

Also, a tall cup/mug won't fit under the spout. So I pour the water from one cup to another. I do like the old hot shot, saves time and electricity.I gave it one star because I do like the hot shot water heater, I just don't like this one.

UPDATE: A couple months after I wrote this review, there was a burning smell--the cheap thing burned out. Meanwhile it leaked water into the cabinets below and spoiled the food.

I went without one for a while, but eventually bought another one because I like the concept... put in cold water, press a button, come back to boiling water. I bought the cheapest I could find because it won't last. I'm just glad I don't have to replace all my other appliances every year.

Amazon didn't publish my last review so I am rewriting it from memory.

I owned this for 150 days and then it quit. We took it apart, basically this design is living on borrowed time as the unit will eventually fail.

Sunbeam placed the actual electronic switch below the aluminum bowl part and on top of the plastic housing. The grey button on the top is nothing more than a lever to another piece that actually depresses the electronic switch below the aluminum bowl. The real electronic switch is less than an inch from where the water flows from the aluminum bowl and out the dispenser. That switch, also sits right next to the heating element. Now you don't need to be an engineer to know that electronics don't care for heat and they don't care for water. In our case the heat killed the electronic "on" switch. I am not sure where the previous model's (3211) actual "on" switch was, but it had to be in a smarter location that this for it to last TEN years.

So the old design, built in the US apparently lasted 10 years and the new design, made in China lasted 150 days. I should have read the 1-star reviews as I would have found that just about every owner of the previous model have had nothing but bad experience with this model. Don't discount the opinions of those that owned the previous model. I don't think I will ever buy another Sunbeam product again, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

P.S. The only reason we replaced our ten year old 3211 model was because the rubber or plastic seal in the dispenser part had worn out and the unit would leak while dispensing.

This product has been around for over a decade, and for good reason: it works, and works well. My mother bought me one in Fall 1993 when I went off to college and lived in a tiny dorm room. It has served me well ever since. Nearly 12 years later, it still works as well as the day I got it. It really does heat 16 ounces of water to boiling in under 2 minutes. It's insulated so the outside does not get hot. Just remember to only heat water inside of it, not other liquids. It has a nice, clean look and a modern design which I'd even call "cute". Living in a 1920's house has it's drawbacks. One of them being icy breezes when its below zero outside. I have modern central heat but why heat up the whole town? I did already have a sappy 1500w convection heater but all it did was warm one side of my ankle while drying out my eyes with it's noisy fan. So I shopped around for an infared heater. I choose this one because it a) oscillates, b) is silent, c) is 2 feet tall. I needed something that would go under my computer desk and keep my whole side warm, not just my ankles. I admit this does the job nicely. Crank it to 800w to heat up the surroundings (about a half hour) then turn it down to 400w for the rest of the night. I had it a few nights now with temps outside dipping into the low 30's.

Pros:

It's like an electric fireplace. Toasty!

It's cheap to buy and run.

It is totally silent.

It is tall, and with the oscillation going it will heat you from head to toe without burning you.

Cons:

It's lights on high are about as bright as a 60w bulb, and on low about a 40w bulb. Granted it is a more pleasant warm sunset color light but it is very bright. You could never use this openly in a room facing you. It has to go under a desk, or at least facing a wall. You literally can't look into it more than a few seconds without going blind. This is why I gave it 4 stars.

It's very light and fragile feeling. Don't know how many years of use it will survive. I think if it is knocked over a few times it will break. However I can't ding it for that until it actually does break. I just spilled a drink on it and it is still going lol.

Over all a good investment if you can place it in such a way as to not become blinded by it. :)

I bought this heater because it is energy efficient with two heating levels of 400 watts and 800 watts--significantly lower than most space heaters. I bought it to replace an older 1500 watt space heater that I used in my sunroom in December which significantly raised my monthly electric bill and I mean 4 times higher (I have gas heat). I am hoping my January electric bill will return to a much lower level with the use of this comfort zone flat panel halogen heater. I will need to wait until the bill arrives to see if this will be the case. There is no blower on this heater altho it does radiate heat to the immediate area. It does not heat up the entire room and this room is the size of a small bedroom but it does heat the space around me enough to use the sunroom for eating breakfast, lunch or reading. The unit shuts off if it is moved even slightly--a good safety feature. It does have two very bright heating elements which my pets do not like and therefore they keep their distance (a good thing). The casing does get warm to the touch but not overly hot. I only use this heater while I am in the room--approximately two hours a day. It may take longer time to heat up the entire area of a small room however I do not believe it was designed for whole room heating.

This one does a nice job, burt we have recently noticed that if it stays on for long periods of time there must be a overheat switch on it, because it will cut itself off. After just a year, my husband's control goes to "E" (for error?) when he'd move. The cord at his feet is always fully and tightly plugged in--so it seems to be a short in the actual surface area of the pad. Nothing we can fix. Within less than a year, this item has heating elements that no longer work, leaving many cold spots in the bed. Additionally, the part where the cord plugs into the mattress cover is right where your feet hit. I'd take this back if I still had my receipt.

You can feel the coils a bit if you just use it alone, but if you put another mattress pad over it, you can't feel anything besides the plug connection at the bottom, and that is not bad. AS for the heat, it is great for taking the edge off a cold bed before you go to sleep, and keeps the bed nice and warm without being hot!. I would recommend it to anyone. Controls are very easy to use and it is easy to set up. The dual controls are great since my wife likes it quite warm, but I like to turn it off after getting into bed.

The only complaint is the wires are quite noticeable.

I bought this model because it has dual controls and dual wiresets.

I won't ever use it, but my wife commonly "freezes" at night.

She says it's wonderful.

She usually runs it at 6 (out of 10) and is quite comfortable.

Bonus when one controller or wireset eventually breaks, I can swap it for "mine" and use it even longer.

This product is Super!

Starting a fire in our wood burning stove is simple and safe. No need for newspapers or mounds of kindling again.

I stack the inch and bigger pieces in the form of a log cabin (crisscross) and put the Ignite-o at the bottom. It recommends 2 packets but I have always used only one. Not a problem.

One match and that is all it takes. No more worries about paper going up the chimney and lighting it on fire. It is quick, convenient, safe, and the price cannot be beat.

I got a few of these as a free sample when I purchased a Creosote Sweeping Log to burn in my fireplace. Being the end of the fireplace season, I didn't get to use them indoors, but have had great luck with them in the firepit out back. Put one of these under a decenly well built stack of wood, and you should have a strong fire in no time. I don't know what's actually in these, but it seems to be some kind of solid fuel that burns easily, but somewhat slow. You get a good strong flames from it, and it probably lasts 5-10 minutes before the firestarter packet is all burned up. By then, the wood is well on it's way.

Oh, and they are very easy to light too, just take a match or lighter to the plastic around the edge of the packet, and it fires right up.

We live in a house with only a wood stove for heat. In the early winter mornings it's wonderful to just put on some logs and one Ignite-O to get the fire roaring. We used to have to put on kindling and hope it would start up now we just light the Ignite-O and it's a sure thing!

This is an incredible heater that has kept my child's room warm for 2 winters with no problems. That room use to be very chilly in the winter as the HVAC doesn't cover it evenly. This sits in the corner and takes up no space at all. The dog even sleeps in that room and loves the warmth. I bought one at a log home show in Essex Jct., VT two years ago. These heaters will maintain temperature and raise it within reason. They are very efficient. If you do not have humdtity up there, I believe 40%, then you should purchase the larger model that has a built in humidifier. The heat travels through the moisture. These heaters are not intended to replace a much larger heat source such as central heating or a wood stove that can raise temperature from below freezing to comfortable room temperatures. They do an excellent job of holding temperature and raising it within a much narrower range which most purchasers will find quite satisfactory. Remember its only 1500 watts maximum. That make for very inexpensive heat. With oil and gas costing as much as electricity this is a much more efficient route. If you heat the areas you are using rather than from wall to wall that alone will save you about 25% in heat. In Europe they only use focused heat because energy supplies are so expensive. Many large building like churches are not heated at all.

Before I purchased one I had already checked them all out. This is a well established firm that builds high quality highly rated products on the high end.

The air purifier which is part of the unit is worth as much as the heater so how can you lose.

I use my heater in the quiet mode and seldom turn it up. Most of the time its supplies all the heat for the ground floor, 865 s.f. but the bedroom doors are closed when not in use. The first month I used it our electric bill went up $18.00.

You will find the heat to be exceedingly comfortable for an electric heater. The heater its self hardly get warm. If you are willing to follow my advice you should purchase one and see if you like it. You will. If you are expecting to use it differently you may need to go for central heating. Use the product as it was designed to be used. Leave the furnace off. If you want more even heat than purchase two or three heaters but if they are running all the time expect to pay for it. I'm going to purchase another heater this year for room down stairs in my finished basement with an exposed wall. Unless your are on natural gas, the days of cheap energy are over. Almost anyone can do this easily and safely.

I have an edenpure heater that is larger than this unit and cost quite a bit more and this heater does a much better job. It heats better on a lower setting (68) than my other heaters do at high (13-15). It is also quieter and takes up less space, this is a great value.

Apparently they still have this problem. I had assumed they had fixed it by now. I can't imagine why they haven't. They are sending people the WRONG PRODUCT. I actually didn't mind the different heater they sent so I just kept it. Note it does NOT have a humidifier if that's what you were focusing on.

There was an immediate improvement even in the chilliest corner as soon as I switched it on, and the thermostat option was very helpful. Just recently the power light started flickering, and after that the overheat alarm started going off. I feel I got more than I paid for and so I hunted down the same model again for this winter!

This china built turd burned out in less than a few months. The wires inside melted and smoked. Very risky for home use. PAtton outsourced these from china and the Chinese make junk. DONT BUY THIS.

Bought one of these about 2 weeks ago, seemed to work well at first. A few hours later the fan was making an annoying chirping noise off and on.

Fast forward 2 weeks, and I smell a burning electronic smell but can't tell where it's coming from. A few minutes pass and suddenly I see my shiny new space heater shooting sparks like crazy. Luckily I was across the room, and quickly unplugged it, otherwise it likely would have started a fire.

I bought a cheap one under the assumption they're pretty simple products, and anything should do the trick, but apparently "not burning your house down" is something you have to pay a little extra for.

I have been using one of these for seven (yes, 7) years at work and it's showing no signs of giving up the ghost. It runs almost all day every day including summer because the AC at work is too cold for me. I actually have another one waiting in the wings in case this does finally quit and am now buying one to replace a 9-year-old old Maxi-Heat in my bathroom. To those who let heaters run unattended (as in when you're sleeping)... you just shouldn't. If you must, get an oil-filled radiator type they're much safer to leave unattended

Well last night I woke up and felt cold. But the heater was still making noise. I got up and all the elements were off, there was a funny smell but the fan was still blowing cool air out. I toggled the switch and nothing would work.

So, I unplugged the heater, got my flashlight and screwdriver and looked inside. I took it apart(fan side) and the wire connected to the element had literally melted through the connection point and there were signs of burnt plastic on the wire and the connection point.

Basically there was a mini fire inside the unit while I was SLEEPING.I cannot explain how uncomfortable this knowledge made me feel today. I got lucky, but someone else might not.Someones kids may not,please avoid this product. I would never recommend this unit to anyone. Please don't buy this unit it quite literally could burn your house down while you sleep. Btw, the overheat alarm never went off, I don't understand how this unit is still on the market.

I am currently sitting in a cold room tonight because I have no heater down here atm. I need to get one tomorrow.If you have any question I will try to answer them.

As soon as I figure out how I will be reporting this to UL and see what they have to say, I have seen a few other negative fire related reviews about this product online.
