I haven't seen the electric bill yet so I'm giving this heater 5 stars. I had previously bought one of the propane Reddy Heaters (RLP50VA see my review on that) to heat my garage but that heater was completely unsuitable for that task. This one is perfect, it heats up the garage quickly and is quiet and clean. It is a 240v heater and requires a hardwired installation so is a little bit of a pain but I wired everything up and had an electrician friend come check out my work before I turned it on and all was OK. Needed a 30A dual pole circuit breaker and 10/2 wire along with a junction box and flexible connecting cable but it was worth the effort! My garage is a garage under (standard Colonial) 26x22 so the ceiling is insulated but nothing else is. Living in NH, a heated garage for working on the cars is pretty much a necessity and I would recommend this heater highly.

I built my woodshop which is well insulated (R19 in walls, R40 in ceiling) and about 460 square feet with 8 foot ceilings. Living in Iowa, I was skeptical whether this heater could do the job where it sometimes gets 10 to 20 below for several days in Dec and Jan. Those fears were alleviated.

If you are at all concerned that the heater can handle a level of cold that commonly reaches 33 below (wind chill) and -20 ambient temp, worry no more. I kept the heater on the third mark out of 10 and it maintained between 49 and 53 depending on the coldness of the night. When I went out to work, I turned it up to a tad beyond LOW and it leveled at 60 degrees. It's also very quiet in that I'm able to have a normal voice conversation with anyone present and we aren't really aware when it turns on. Very nice not have the smell of fuel oil in the air. I'm very happy with the purchase.

Edit as of 01-03-09. The local news just advised that here in my area, it is the 9th coldest December since 1897 when they started keeping track. They also said it is the second snowiest December on record. There were several days below 0 and a couple to -20 ambient temp which is common in those months any Winter. This small heater keeps up better than I thought it would.

Edit as of Dec of 2012 Unit still works like it was new. I'm now on my 5th Iowa Winter with this in the shop and haven't had any issue at all. I'd make the same decision tomorrow and highly recommend it.

I needed dependable heat for a small (480 sq/ft) woodworking shop. Prior to installing this unit I was using a Monitor kerosene heater which was plagued with mysterious 'shut-downs'. Because of limited space a wood stove was out of the question, so I gave this unit a try; it's more than adequate (I live in Maine) to maintain comfortable working temperatures even on the coldest of days. Got my first electric bill yesterday and it wasn't nearly as expensive to run as I had thought...adding maybe $100 to the total electric bill (and the unit is running 24/7)!

All in all, an excellent source of shop heat.

I purchased this heater for my 700 sq. ft. shop with 12' ceiling (well insulated). In the first hour it raised the temperature from 43 to 55 degrees (F). After two hours temp. was up to about 60F. I was impressed.

It is small, quiet, and produces great heat for its size.

Thermostatically controlled fan will cycle on and off until the ambient temperature is above 55 or so, then will run continuously until reaching desired temp.

Good heat with poor documentation. Documentation does not give a clue as to how to connect to today's 240v 4 wire connections.

The heater requires a 240v 30amp 3 wire connection. I have a 30 amp 4 wire outlet. Therefore, I purchased a 4 wire 240v dryer pigtail from Home Depot. Then I connected black to black, red to white, and green to green (ground). Black and red are the two incoming hot wires in newer 240 volt 4-wire arrangements...I presume. I am NOT an electrican.

The 4th wire (white) in this case is not needed. I capped the white wire and tied it off inside the heater.

Expect some smoke in the first couple of minutes...from oils on the heating elements, etc. It is a nice heater considering price and size.

I subtracted one star in my rating due to the poor documentation.

I spent a lot of time debating the type of heater for a three car garage well insulated, with 9' ceiling. In Oklahoma it does some times get pretty cold. However, when it is in the 20s outside my garage is warm and comfortable. The thermostat is great. I have the heater waving a wall so it never is blowing on me. I found it easy to install if your comfortable putting in 2 30 amp breakers and fishing some wire.

I did not purchase this AC from Amazon, I purchased it from Waldbaums just days ago. This is the worst air conditioner I have ever purchased. It is made of plastic and styro-foam and does not keep the room cool. I run it on high all night and the room is luke warm imagine if I tried to run it during the day when it is really hot! Save your money, even at $99.00, which I paid, it is a waste of money. I would of returned it but, I am a 65 year old women and it is quite heavy for me to handle. I purchased the Cobraco Sh101 Hand Hammered Copper Fire Pit with Screen (spark arrestor) 11 months ago. As can be expected of a screen that's exposed to high heat consistantly it's now rusted through and has big holes in it which renders it dangerous to leave unattended. I contacted the company directly and was told that since I didn't keep my proof of purchase they would not replace it. I completely understand this and offered to buy a replacement from them, but I was told that they don't sell them separately so my only option is to go spend another $270 for a whole new set.

I think the fact that they won't allow me to purchase a replacement part separately is a very unfriendly policy for their customers. I mean really, who keeps receipts from every purchase you make... particularly ones that have no moving parts?

The copper bowl itself has held up well...but if you decide to purchase this item make sure you keep your receipt because you'll need it to get your screen replaced within the first year!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Up front, I want to note that this "portable fire pit" will do what it says it will do. However, it could have been designed infinitely better.

After having spent a lifetime at camping in the outdoors all over the country, and having earned my college degree in Parks and Recreation (which includes maintenance and design), and serving for 25 years as a park ranger/park manager, I can honestly say that I actually know a great deal about every sort of fire device which has ever been contrived. In fact, I have designed several myself.

Here we have a solid copper bowl, a steel three-legged support, a wire cover/screen, and a vinyl rain cover for when the unit is cool and not in use. The idea here is to build a fire in the bowl so that folks can sit around it, roast a few marshmallows or hot dogs on a stick, and enjoy the evening. You can do that. The company recommends that you put sand in the bottom of the bowl and I wholly agree with that. Here are my issues:

1. The copper is too thin. A really hot fire could potentially weaken the walls and possibly melt through over time (hence the sand in the bowl helps to alleviate this problem but I still would much limit the size/heat of the fire.)

2. The feet on the tripod support are entirely too small at the base. If you have the weight of sand and firewood in the bowl and the ground is soft, this thing is going to sink. If it sinks on one side only, this could cause some difficulties, depending upon how you are using the unit. I think it's also too flimsy. So you're probably going to need to set this up on some thin bricks if you plan to use this in your yard, (especially if you plan to use the same spot all the time.)

3. There are no air vents in the bowl. (This may have been an intentional design feature to keep the fire from getting too hot.)

4. Cleaning out the ashes, (without taking your sand with it), is somewhat of a hassle, a very slow and dirty project. This, I might add, is a problem with almost all campfire rings and fire pits. You MUST remove ashes after use because they are caustic and, (especially if water gets in the bowl), the bowl will deteriorate.

There are other minor issues but those are the four chief drawbacks as I see them. I would characterize the unit overall, as "a looker" rather than a highly functional unit. Given the materials used, I would have made it half the diameter that it is, thus making the copper twice as thick. The same goes for the tripod supports and I would also have added round foot pads which were at least six inches across. A few air holes low on the sides to enhance combustion would be nice too.

Using this unit for cooking, (such as a pot of beans, or laying a grill across the top) would definitely not be recommended.

I really liked the idea of the copper bowl in terms of quality materials but I think the designer got pretty far afield in terms of utility. I wish they would have called me (or another outdoor recreation professional) -I would have steered them in a superior direction.

In summary, if you want a small campfire, two or three evenings during the summer just to enjoy the night and entertain the kids a bit, then this will probably work for you. However, if I tried to use this unit as I do use my own portable fire pits, (I currently have two, both home-made), it would be in the junk-pile in about a week.

Recommended for light use.

This product is exactly as it's described. Amazon recommends the Veranda canvas cover and I agree it's MUCH better quality than the one that ships with it. The pit itself is nice and deep & sturdy so there is plenty of room for logs without the worry of it tipping over. The copper is a bit thinner than I expected but I'm not sure YET if that matters. Some other reviews mentioned that the mesh cover melts so I've been too chicken to put it on as the fire is blazing. You can't make a decent s'more with the cover on anyway :)

We've had this fire basin for a few months now and love it. There appears to be good air circulation, so the fires burn hot (i.e. good brightness and not too much smoke, although still smoke). The copper also turns a pretty color with burning, but that's true of all copper. I also really like the cover, and have put it on several of our larger and more unwieldy fires with no detrimental effect, as far as I can tell.

Concrete patio; no wood deck that could catch fire.

Plenty of seasoned oak to burn. No junk sparky wood.

Moderate need for real heat (eastern NC).

The feet on the legs are stable on a concrete surface. Our fire pit arrived as intended, with no transit damage. The screen looks like it will hold up long enough. I need the copper to discolor in a hurry, actually, unlike some people who didn't appear to understand that copper doesn't hold its orange color unless you work your polishing tailbone off to keep it that way. In our neighborhood, copper wire and pipe gets stolen. I don't want passers-by to see that we have a big piece of obvious copper in the backyard. Figure a few more fires will do the trick.

The one downside we noticed on set-up that missed my attention when I selected this product: Rain.

The fire pit is shipped with a fitted vinyl cover, not unlike the kind you get for your barbeque grill. However, the fire pit is smaller than a grill, and low to the ground. My partner put the cover over the fire pit. I looked at it and said, "that's not going to work." He said, "why not?" I gestured toward the dogs (5), who have been known to destroy a car cover, blinds, couches, chairs, etc etc and so forth. Industrious little buggers.

He said, "oops."

So, for now, we are thinking about how to keep our pit covered when not being used. We might could move it into the carport, or simply tip it up on its side, or something. If dog chewing is a problem for your backyard, the cover may not work for you either.

But that's not really the fault of the fire pit; simply something we hadn't considered.

I love these things. They burn for about 15 minutes, and are perfect for heating up enough water to make my morning oatmeal and a 20-oz cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate. I love this fireplace. I did a lot of shopping around to get the best price. (hint hint) I am very happy that the construction is metal, not plastic. It isn't thick metal but at least it's not plastic! The only assembly required is screwing on the legs (which ARE made of thick plastic but it is not obvious.) It's probably better for the floor that the legs are plastic so there is no rust or dents. The flame, logs, embers, and log holder all look surprisingly realistic. I was skeptical before I got it. There are 2 heat settings. It gives off a lot of heat. I have a big, drafty bedroom and it heats that place right up, even on Low!!! You do not have to wait for it to heat up. Instant heat. This is one of 3 artificial fireplaces in our home...I prefer the look of them rather than a space heater...We have a large 105 year old home and the extra heat sources are needed in some rooms...This is my favorite looking one...I like the fire, but think the logs are a bit bright. You can change the bulbs and I may try a lower watt bulb when I am in the mood to change it. I read a review about it being metal...only a tin type back cover...but it is plenty sturdy. I really like the size. It is a bit bigger that some others of this style...There is no remote, but it's not a big deal to me. I like that you can have the fire on without the heat on. I also like the heat itself...low is nice for a bedroom. I eventually turn it off before going to sleep. I only gave it a 4 star review because sometimes it sounds like a cricket...with a bit of a low sounding chirping and it stops if I tap underneath where the heater box is. (maybe a squeaky fan) And also because the logs were to bright in my opinion...Overall I really like it. I looked at a lot of them before deciding and the price and style were right for me. Also came in 24 hrs for an extra $3.00 yes Three dollars...that was really nice, since I was hoping to have it before Christmas. This stove looks great and puts out enough heat in our great room that I eventually have to turn it to low.(about an hour or so) We have a high ceiling and a loft upstairs so there is a lot of area to heat. We have radiant heat flooring and it sucks the life out of our wallet using the propane every winter!! Thought we would take a chance on this stove after a lot of investigation of all types, sizes, prices and brands. My husband was very skeptical, but now he is happy that I am a very good shopper.

Some reviews complained that it was made out of plastic. Well yes, it is made out of a heavy duty type plastic which enables you to move the stove around if you need to. If it was made out of metal it would be to heavy to move. The stove weighs about 60 lbs. as it is. I put furniture pads on the feet so if I need to move it I can just push it on the hardwood floors to another location. The flame is realistic to the point that I want to go and throw another log on the fire!!

Arrived with a cracked frame. One of the reviews I read before purchasing stated that it is metal. The only metal I could find are the hinges. The entire body is plastic.

It makes a pleasant "fire". We put it in our bedroom and it keeps us mildly warm, we were hoping for more heat. It is OK, just not a +5.

The manufacturer refunded $20 for the cracked frame.

I have had this electric fireplace for appox. 3 months now. It is perfect for that little extra heat needed. I have it in my living room near where I usually sit and I am toasty warm. My furnace does not come on as often, even in our -20 below zero weather here in northern Wisconsin, I was never chilled. I have not had to bring out my electric blanket for extra warmth this winter. Great product. It is not metal but it is sturdy enough. The heat comes out from the bottom which will get your toes warm standing in front of it. I purchased this as a gift for my mom who has always wanted a fireplace.

It was bigger than I expected... the rock base is a solid piece of rock and it is quite heavy.

It produces a nice big flame, but seems safe.

It crackles like a real fireplace and throws off some decent heat. You can't heat a room with it, but you can feel it if you're close enough.

This item looks and burns eactly like the pictures in the advertisement. While only intended to be decorative, it does put out a reasonable amount of heat, so my wife can be warm on her end of the couch and I can be comfortable on mine. It has a low odor and pleasant crackling sound as it burns. I have one minor complaint. It will burn only about 2/3 of its fuel before it will no longer function. This is a venting issue. But the fuel is easily scooped out and placed in another partially used can with a spoon, so this is certainly not a show stopper. All in all, a very nice room accent.

This little fireplace cheers up so many cold evenings at my house! We don't have a built-in fireplace at our house...but this one is great. It crackles, the flame is actually quite high, and it seems to be very sturdy (have used it for 3 years now). The glass does get sort-of black/sooty, but I think that's just what happens with fire. You can (mostly) wash it off). You do need to buy the gel fuel cans, which can be pretty expensive. I buy them here on Amazon...have never been able to find them in stores. They're about $2-$4/can, which lasts about 4 hours or so. Still, it's worth it...we don't have a "fire" every night, but once a week or so, we have one. We use this fireplace inside with no problems, though the flame is pretty high, so with little kids it might be an issue. We have 3 dogs and have only had 1 or 2 "close calls."

Friends who come over always love this thing. Everyone wants to know where to buy it. I got mine a long time ago, so it's nice to know they're still selling it!

How have I lived without this for so long? It works like a charm! The ribbon broke fairly quickly, but that is easy enough to replace with something a little more sturdy. We now fight over who gets to tend to the fire.

It works pretty well and I'm glad to have it. However, the next time I buy a bellows I will search for something else.

The "leather" on this bellows is rather flimsy. I'm not sure that its actually leather. After a month of use, its starting to show some wear. I expect that it will develop a hole soon and the bellows will need to be replaced.

As far as power goes, I can blow on the fire just about as effectively as this bellows can. I've used more powerful bellows before.

I replaced the gerbil sized grate in our fireplace with one of these. It's a much better shape, holds wood well enough, and very sturdy. But we found the massive gaps between each bar let the wood fall through as it wood burns.

I never had issues with logs wanting to roll out the front as another reviewer has experienced, and I generally use the "fake" logs. I've used real wood too, and invariably most of the material will end up under the grate festering in the ash.

I tried putting the oven's grill grate over the top, it fits rather well. Unfortunately that melted. Oops!

I'm now looking for a replacement.

I ordered this to replace our old, broken grate and am sorry I did so. This grate has no middle bar to keep the logs from spilling out of the fireplace. We have to carefully place the wood in the grate and then keep an eye on it because as the wood shifts, it can sometimes roll right out and up against the screen, or worse, out onto the carpet. It is just a weird design and not a good one. Don't waste your $20 on this item, opt for a model that will actually hold the logs in.

Update 1/26/13. Bought this about 1 year ago, and it really hasnt held up. We have fires often (2 to 3 times a week). The rack warped in the middle. I think it is a little too light weight for our needs. If you dont burn really hot fires, or use your fireplace too often, this might be ok for you, but Im in the market for a new one now.

This is lovely and a good size to hold wood. It matches well with any brass tool set you have. I like the filigree trim which brings it up a notch. Attaching the feat was difficult because the screws seemed to be the wrong size. We put it together flimsily, however, since it only needs to sit on the floor and hold wood it is good enough. A close examination would reveal flaws, but the price is outstanding and from normal viewing distance it is a lovely addition to our fireplace. This fits in beautifully in front of my parent's gorgeous fireplace in their formal living room.

It gets cold in Minnesota! We have a large family room in our older house with a horribly cold floor (it's built over a crawl space). The room has a hardwood floor and an area rug. We installed the Rug Buddy between the rug pad and the rug. The installation was easy and except for the cord you don't see it or feel it when you walk on the rug (you feel the warmth but not the thickness of the Rug Buddy). My only complaint is the cord which I felt was too short.

We bought this for our 10' x 12' sun room, where we spend most evenings no matter what season. As we live in Chicago, it can get quite cold in the winter. We put the Rugbuddy down, using the recommended pad they sell, put our rug over it, and now have perfectly warm feet, no matter how cold it is outside. We absolutely love it. I wish we had bought one 25 years ago, when we had the room built.

I did much research before arriving at this purchase. I live in New England and have electric heat. My baseboard heaters run efficiently, but use between 750 and 1250 watts per heater. At 16.2 cents per kilowatt hour, the heating costs add up. I bought this and the 165 watt rugbuddy based on amazon reviews, and, after researching different types of electric space heaters, I thought the rugbuddy might heat my living space with lower watts. The rugbuddy works well in conjunction with other heaters running at lower temperatures, but is not so great as the sole heating source unless the weather is brisk outside. The 165 works great in conjunction with the smallest, 350/500 watt baseboard heater in the bedroom. when it is 17 to 20 degrees outside, the room is 64 degrees inside. Plastic window insulation, thermal curtains, weather stripping, and caulking all contribute to help raise the temperature while lowering power consumption. However, the 470, I feel should emit a little more heat. I have been contemplating testing out a piece of aluminum foil between the rugbuddy and the rug to increase the heat produced. But I'm not quite sure if that will lead down the path to Darwin award candidacy. I wish the manufacturer would supply a rug mat that might amplify the heat in such a manner with safety consciousness in mind.

I bought this to warm the rug and surrounding area of the room. Well, the rug was warmed but I was expecting it to be warmer. Had no real effect on the overall comfort of the room IMO. Nice to lay on in front of tv or just stretch out.

What some call flimsy, I call lightweight. And I appreciate not having to wrestle with a heavy screen when making a fire. My fireplace itself is decorative, so, for my purposes, the simplicity of this mesh screen design works well. The screen came packaged in a lot of protective cushioning, too, and did not require assembly, so no problems there. I suppose if this screen gets rough treatment (though why would it?) that it might not last as long as some others that are more substantial. On the other hand, this screen also cost less than many, so I could afford to replace more often, too.

I intentionally ordered bargain screens for some rarely used fireplaces. They're OK, but realize that they really are very light weight and cheaply made. Joints had come unscrewed and were in pieces right out of the box. Easily fixable, but... They'll probably serve the purpose, just a little disappointing.

I have ordered thousands of items in my lifetime, and bar none, this is the biggest piece of crap I have ever received. It is supposed to come completely put together, but when it arrived, there were no less than 10 little parts that had come off the screen assembly and one screen that was loose and all of its parts dangling. The first thing that happenned is that I cut myself on one of the screens because the protective side had come off. I was bleeding for quite some time. The second thing I noticed was the extremely poor quality of the material and assembly. I am very handy by nature, but even I had to give up trying to put this piece of junk back together again. Plus it was not worth it, even if I had put it together again, all I would have then had was a piece of crap fireplace screen.

The good thing about this fireplace screen is that it has clean simple lines and is just three rectangular flat black panels. You'd be surprised how hard that is to find! I needed it to keep my small dog from wandering too close to our gas fireplace and it achieves that objective just fine. The down side is that it is of extremely light weight materials, not like heavy fireplace screens I remember from my youth. wouldn't stand up to anything heavy bashing against it, but it looks ok. More imported handiwork.
