This heater works like a charm! Before starting my review, please take note that it is NOT meant to heat the air in a room and bring up the temperature. This type of heater heats the objects that are within it's distance.

That being said, let's get to the good and the bad. Overall I give this 5 stars. When I first mounted the heater above my workbench too high (10') and could not feel the heat very well. I dropped it down to around 7 feet and that was the ticket!

Works great for a close proximity spot heater. Perfect if hanging out with friends in the garage having a beer and a smoke.

There are two things I did not like about the heater, but they are both fixable and I recommend you do this. First, the little light that is built in is rather annoying. There are three settings you have to choose from. Pull the string once (I) and it turns on the light. Pull it again (II)and the unit turns on one of the two heating elements. Pull the string a third (III) time and both the heating elements turn on.

Oh, and that annoying light stays on the whole time. You cannot have the heater on and the light off. So I pulled the bulb. Simple fix.

Second downfall is the mounting bracket. It is NOT rugged enough to keep the heater solid when using the pre-drilled slot holes that come in the bracket. Simple fix...drill two holes of your own. The farthest left and right sides of the bracket as you can. Also utilize the hole in the center of the bracket for extra support.

The unit can be 'clipped' on to the bracket upside down as well, if you'd rather the pull string/power cord be on the opposite side.

Hope this helps anyone looking to purchase. Just remember it's not meant to heat the air, only the object in front of it.

It is just what we expected. We have it hanging from two chains (one on each side) so that it is lower for our dogs in the garage. Seems to work well. I appreciate the on/off cord. We don't utilize the light, but it does work. I tried to find something like this a couple of years ago and couldn't find one. I'm very happy with this product.

Update: September 26th, 2013 I am ordering my second unit. The first one had a good life and it is still working, however one bulb is out and it isn't worth just buying the bulb. We've continued to be happy with this unit. I would agree with others that this is more a space heater than an overall air heater. We use the chains to extend it down because it wouldn't give the heat we were looking for being mounted to the garage ceiling.

I have been looking high and low for quite some time for exactly this.

A simple plug in ceiling mounted directional heater.

Writing this review while sitting outside under it. I live in Western Washington near Seattle. There are many rainy days, like right now, where I want to sit outside under my covered patio but the low to mid 40 degree weather drives me back inside when my fingers start chilling from the cold and make typing tough. About 4 feet above me this works just fine. However, I can imagine if the temp was 30 something or lower and/or with a decent breeze then the heat would not be enough. Keep in mind this unit plugs into a standard 15 amp outlet so don't expect blazing BTU's.

Install was simple and tomorrow I will install an electrical socket a few feet from it (instead of the extension cable I am now using temporarily).

For the price I have no complaints, however, I would have liked a few things that this does not.

1. An On/off switch for the light. Didn't see one but I could be wrong as I set this up in the dark.

2. More heat. However, I did the math on this real quick. At 1500 watts it is drawing 12.5amps at 120 volts so this is about as much as you can get away with. Some older breakers that can't hold constant 15amp draw (and/or may have a few other things running on the same circuit) will 'trip' open. So, this is about as powerful as it gets on standard home wiring. Can't complain there!

In closing, great little unit, quick install, and after I put an outlet near it, will look like a professional setup. Note: Off set an outlet at least 1 foot away so it is not directly above the unit and make sure to tie the excess cabling off away from the unit as the whole thing does get pretty toasty :).

I was rather pleased with the quality of this heater considering its low price. It is not industrial grade, but it is not flimsy either.

Under the amp meter, it came it at about 12.5 amps. So its pulling its rating. This uses up all of a residential circuit, or three quarters of a standard shop circuit.

The heat produced is very reasonable. Mounted about 8 feet up, it heats an area about 8ftx8ft.

Remember this is an infrared heater. The air will not warm, the objects it shines on will warm. Similar to sunlight.

I was looking for a heater to attach to my patio wall. It was advertised as a wall or ceiling heater. When I got it, it said it was for a ceiling only. We did install the heater, but you can barely feel any heat. I live in Calif., so I am not overworking the heater. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Simple to install but the fan or appliance it is connected to needs a separate on/off switch as once it is activated the appliance cannot be turned off using the timer itself. The audible ticking down is soft enough to be acceptable. Works well here in Australia with our 240v power supply. Easily fits our standard wall fittings though you have to drill two screw holes to in order to fix it to our wall brackets. Pity I could not get this in a white color at the time of purchase as it would have been better had it matched the rest of our electrical fittings in the home. For us, these were used to control bathroom Exhaust fans. All members of the family are pleased with the results.

I recently bought this for a fireplace made with inlaid stone that's uneven in places. The screen stays in place well enough but it's a tipping hazard if kids pull on it at all. It does have two feet in the front to prevent tipping forward and it's probably a lot more stable on a flat surface. The screen looks good and I like having the doors.

This screen is total crap. Just got it today, and set it up. Was not as described. First of all, there is a swinging lock on the front of the two doors. Not a bad thing, just didn't expect it. Second, the legs are small and completely worthless. They do nothing to prevent the screen from tipping over. Third, the panels WILL NOT STAY FOLDED. Instead, they continuously fold straight, and since the legs are worthless, the whole screen keeps falling. And if you do manage to get it to stay standing, as soon as you open the doors, the weight of the doors plus the swinging lock causes the entire thing to fall down. Very light and cheap-feeling. I was utterly disappointed, and returned immediately.

If it did stay open, it would be great, but sadly, once this bag gets wet, say from sitting it on the ground by your woodpile, the initial rigidity of the fabric disappears, and it becomes a floppy mess. This is a great log carrier, it is durable, and holds enough wood to keep the fire going well into the evening. The look of it is nice, it holds it's shape when you stack the wood in it properly (not just throw it in) and makes bringing it back inside very easy and neat. Purchased the Pleasant Hearth Fenwick fireplace doors in size large after reading many 5 star reviews. The opening (outside dimension of the tempered glass doors) is 36" so it fits my 36" wide fireplace nicely (go with the largest size possible so that you have a larger viewing and easier access to the inside of your fireplace (also the trim covers the brick face of the fireplace and the more coverage the better for insulation and asthetic purposes). They are heavy and high quality -very solid. The color is a dark oil rubbed bronze and the quality of the finish is excellent. The quality is surprisingly good for the money. The product also comes with strips of insualtion that fit inside the open areas behind the trim. You can certainly add more (R-19), but it isn't necessary. Installation is done by attaching two brackets to the lintel (flat metal bar that is at the top and inside of the fireplace). Ours was a standard size (between 3" and 4" width) so installation was fairly easy (lay on your back and tighten the brackets). The screen doors work nicely and are kept closed when the fire is burning. They are magnetic and simple to use...open the left quickly and the right one also opens. There are even vent holes in the bottom that are adjustable, but we just keep them open. I highly recommend these fireplace doors. We looked at fireplace shops and other similar doors that cost about $1,800 and these doors are of the same quality. In fact, we like the arch style of these even better. 5 stars!

Very satisfied with the quality and look of these doors. As others noted, color is definitely darker than what you see in the photobut that's what I was hoping for.

AS FOR THE INSTALL:

Based on our 1923 fireplace, the instructions recommended to use the "alternate install method" .

My husband had the hardest time drilling through the iron lintel bar. Then, the alternate assembly SHOULD have said to drill at least 1/2 an inch deep, but since it didn't my husband tried to "test" the depth by screwing in one of the screws. BAD IDEA.. You can only get those things in ONCE before the hole is unusable. Unfortunately, I've listened to quite colorful language as he tries to finish up this final home project of ours! Bottomline, even if your lintel bar is just below 3 inches, USE THE REGULAR INSTALLATION METHODit still works and would have saved us quite a bit of time and a few drill bits.

This is a very nice product--looks beautiful on our fireplace and generally is as advertised. however--a couple of issues: although the packaging was superb and the box was not in any way damaged, there were 2 damages inside--which tells me the damage occurred before packaging and not as a result of shipping. So quality control is clearly an issue. (1) One of the screen doors was 'dented' noticeably and (2) there was a significant and noticeable scratch in the finish on the outside of one of the glass door frames--very visible. This was packaged in such a very tight and efficient manner that it is 100% impossible to get it all back into the box for a return, so unfortunately we are forced to keep it with these 'blemishes'. But most irritating is that the installation on our particular fireplace was not nearly as simple as promised! I can't describe every step here, but suffice it to say it has to do with the exact position and size of the lintel in your fireplace and how the mounting brackets fit (or didn't). It took 2 of us over 2.5 hrs to get this secured and fastened and we are very 'handy' and savvy with installations and tools! Not a good installation experience. More specialized parts should have been included for difficult fireplaces like ours. This is not really a 'one size fits all' thing! The doors themselves are beautiful and should be very functional. Color is dark and rich and exactly what we expected and wanted. Doors and screens work very smoothly and the closure of each is very positive and complete. The amount and thickness of the fiberglass insulation supplied was very skimpy at best. I will get some more at Lowes and supplement what was provided with the unit. I'd recommend the unit, but beware of the installation!

I was very, very pleased with this purchase. It looks excellent. I feel this was a great value as the quality of the product, sturdiness of the materials and overall look exceed the price, making it a great value. I recommend that if you purchase this product, do a web search on youtube and find one of the installation videos. I viewed before receiving the product and this made the directions so much clearer. For stone or brick fireplaces, I recommend that you purchase Self-adhesive Fiberglass Insulation for fireplaces or the Fireplace Insert Seal ($12). From the inside, you can seal up and insulate the doors for when the fireplace is not running.

I found these fireback feet to be functional stable and decorative. There are much more expensive feet available that look very industrial rather than colonial era. If you have a decorative fireback these will do it justice. This is especially important when the fireback is moved forwards during the summer for display. The unfavorable reviewers who stated the feet are 6" deep and take up too much of the fireplace have a point but all feet and firebacks are going to reduce the useable depth of your firebox. Measure your grate and determine this for yourself before you buy any fireback feet. You don't need the full 6" clearance as your grate in all likelihood will be elevated above the feet and touch the fireback directly which will be closer to 4.5". Plus you can move the feet side to side and avoid hitting one of the grate bars to create more room. Another advantage these feet have is that they only elevate the fireback 1/4-1/2" unlike others that elevate the fireback 2" off the bottom allowing coals to go behind the fireback reducing the efficiency of the fireback to protect the back of your fireplace and at the same time radiate heat forward. The feet hold the fireback at about a 20-25% angle from vertical (tilting away from the front of the fireplace) depending on the thickness of your fireback.

I purchased these feet as it appeared necessary to hold the accompanying fireback. Unfortunately, they require about six inches of depth space, so in a small fireplace they leave no room for a fire grate or fire after the fireback is installed. The vendor should really explain the problem with using these feet and fireback in a smaller fireplace other than a non-descript "measure your fireplace." Depth is actually just as important as height and width.

I ended up reshaping my old grate with a sledgehammer so it could hold both the fireback and the burning wood. If you're purchasing a large fireback and have a large fireplace, I sure these would work.

Should return, but shipping costs make it not worth the bother.

We've had this for almost a year. It is completely trouble free. We do set it up on a tile table, because it is small and our cluless dog walked over it (Thankfully he was unhurt). The unit puts out a nice amount of heat and extends the season we can sit outside. it is simple and trouble free to light. I am a very picky decorator and I would prefer a real fireplace, but after hearing my hubby gripe about gas prices and only turning on my gas fireplace for special occasions, I looked for an inexpensive option, and this was perfect. Honestly, with a little doctoring it looks great. I already had a decorative screen and log rack, which really adds to the effect. I also added a small piece of wood across the lit window in the front so it did not look like a perfect rectangle of orange light, which also looks great. I read on another site that some people hid a mirror (or piece of foil) behind the flame to enhance the glow (I haven't tried that, but it might add to the glow effect). The turn on switch is in an odd place, so we plugged it into one of those add in plugs that can be turned on right at the plug or by remote, which is great. The "crackling" sound is a bit odd, but hardly noticeable really. If you play with the piece of metal by bending it, it almost sounds like a true crackle. Put it this way...it's A GREAT DEAL FOR THE MONEY (and you can have it on in any kind of weather)!!!!

This was surprisingly nice electric fire log. They use real wood in the construction, so it actually looks pretty good -maybe not so much when you take it out of the box and sit it on the table, but when it's in your fireplace it looks rather realistic. Turning it on only enhances that realistic appearance even more -it really does look like a glowing, crackling fire, and unless you point out that it's fake, most people would probably not give it a second glance . They'd just think you had a nice fire going. You can increase or decrease the "crackling" noise of the "fire" by bending the metal shield in the back in/out. I also enhanced the overall look by adding some more wood sticks to the front of it so it didn't look quite so perfect of a stack of wood.

Now, it's not without its faults. The first one I received started humming loudly shortly after I first used it. It rapidly got to the point of annoyance where it was simply unusable, so I sent it back for an exchange. The second one seems to be doing better, but I have noticed a bit of a motor hum sometimes. For this one I dampened the vibration/hum a little by putting a piece of foam pipe insulation under each "foot" where it touched the metal grate of my fireplace. I think this helps with the vibration by reducing it going into the medal grate, which is what I believe amplifies that hum.

I ended up installing mine on a wireless remote that also controls all my lights, so I'm able to sit in a chair, push a button, and start my fire. Not clap-on/clap-off, but pretty close! It's pretty nice for what it is. I don't see how any of these fake, non-heating fireplaces could be any better, even though some are hundreds of dollars more expensive. This one does the trick and for a relatively cheap price.

Edit: One more thing -don't waste your money on the high priced decorative grate that is specifically designed for this product. Just about any fireplace grate will do. I picked up one from a local hardware store for $12 that works perfectly.

I purchased a used electric fireplace that is old, very beautiful and just not made like this anymore. However because of a broken part the electric fire was not operable and I have been looking and pondering for almost one year what to do about the situation as I was not going to part with my beautiful electric fireplace with mantel. Wallah you had the answer and now I am in electric fireplace "LOG HEAVEN."

I did not need the heater as I have excellent heat in this independent living facility that I live in. My apartment is small and without a fireplace which is one thing that I will not do without even if I buy my own and carry it with me wherever I go. I did some extra decorative work to make it look more real and in a way you cannot tell that it is a fake. I think it might be able to fool a very young child at first sight and maybe fool the younger child a longer period of time.

These logs are at a price that the poor can afford and much, much lower in price than they could be. The video shows the electric logs as they actually are and so does the advertisement picture of them. These logs are a real blessing for me and I will pray for the inventor and maker of them as he or she is blessing people with these.

Well I received these logs in 2011 and every winter beginning in November it is turned on and stays turned on round the clock until March comes in. At Christmas it is awesome to look at and everyone that sees it like it very much.

One lady could not believe it had no heat and went directly up to it and put her hand directly on the fake fire. No heat at all. I am blessed, I am so blessed with these logs.

I loved this little crackling fire at first. It looked great in my vintage, acorn fireplace. However, after only two weeks the motor has gone. Now it is so annoyingly loud I can't even turn it on. It first started making excessive noise after only one week. I found by positioning it differently it became quiet again but only for a short time. I live in Ontario, so shipping it back to Amazon for an exchange will cost me at least $25. and I don't think that it's worth it. I will most likely have to find some place to have it fixed. So sad.
